UNITAR Official side event of the Intergovernmental Preparatory Meeting for the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) -15 Meeting
Summary
Title: Effective stakeholder participation in reaching sustainable development and CSD 15 goals: Identifying opportunities and challenges for capacity-building in consolidating democracies
Date, Time and Venue: Friday, 2 March, from 1 to 2:45 p.m., Conference Room 4
Coordinator: Catharina Goldschmidt
Background and Objectives
Active participation of stakeholders is considered crucial in promoting environmentally sustainable development and reaching CSD-15 goals. Therefore, a number of pilot projects have been initiated with the support of UNITAR and in collaboration with intergovernmental organizations, governments, academic institutions, and stakeholder groups. These projects aim to develop methodologies and support country-driven capacity assessments related to the implementation of Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration and the Aarhus Convention. This official side-event will introduce self-assessment methodologies developed and tested through these projects, share some initial results from pilot activities, and provide perspectives from the participating partners. It will also outline and offer an opportunity to discuss the partners’ plans to strengthen research, education and capacity-building for effective stakeholder involvement in environmental decision making as an important determinant of sustainable development.
