Summary

Dates: 7-11 December 2009

Location: United Nations Headquarters, New York, Conference Room A

The potential of international trade and the multilateral trading system to contribute to economic growth, development and employment is widely recognized. The World Trade Organization (WTO) is the principal international organization governing world trade and providing a multilateral forum for trade negotiations. The WTO counts 153 member states today. WTO committed to a development agenda at its 4th Ministerial Conference held in Doha in November 2001.The Doha Round was supposed to have been concluded by 1 January 2005, but due to persistent differences in the positions of countries, the negotiations were suspended in July 2006, and collapsted again in in July 2008.

The question today is what the necessary next steps are to work towards a successful conclusion of the Doha Round. This seminar will take place shortly after the Seventh Meeting of the Ministerial Conference of the WTO (30 Nov – 2 Dec), and will shed light on the outcomes of the Meeting and prospects for finalization of the Doha Round in 2010.

UNITAR Aims at Demystifying the Various Elements of the UN System

The United Nations system is a complex constellation of interrelated organizations assisted by an impressive number of principal and subsidiary organs. The system has considerably evolved over the years in order to adjust to changing situations.
The relationship between some of its elements may at times be puzzling. With the purpose of analyzing in depth the respective roles and functions of the principal organs of the UN and their subsidiary bodies, UNITAR offers to the diplomatic communities in UN locations a number of courses focusing in particular on the General Assembly, the Security Council and the Economic and Social Council. In today’s increasingly knowledge-based society, ideas have become a key factor in capital generation and development. Their critical value has given rise to the concept of intellectual property, referred to as “creations of mind”, such as inventions, literary and artistic works, and names and designs used in commerce. With intellectual property issues coming to the fore in international negotiations dealing with climate change, food security and other global challenges, understanding their basic principles has become a prerequisite for all levels of diplomats. To help them get a firm grasp of intellectual property and its major issues of contention, UNITAR offers a comprehensive training seminar to diplomats in New York.  Read More
