Peace and Security Series

Objective:

In 1992, the Agenda for Peace identified ways of strengthening the UN’s capacity for preventive diplomacy, peacemaking, peacekeeping and post-conflict peace-building. Since then, the international community has been faced with a number of challenges to international peace and security, including state failure, the proliferation of internal armed conflicts, and the deliberate targeting of civilians, the rise of non-state actors and emergence of war economies, small-arms proliferation etc. As a result, attention to the concept of human security has increased, and the UN has incorporated a range of innovations, such as the reform of UN peacekeeping and the deployment of integrated missions, the creation of international criminal justice mechanisms, the endorsement of the “responsibility to protect” and the establishment of the Peacebuilding Commission.

This newly launched series is designed to offer a forum for the presentation of analysis, policy strategies and best practices on topics related to peace and security that are currently under discussion at UN Headquarters, notably pertaining to peacebuilding. It is intended to facilitate the exchange of views among different stakeholders, including Member States, UN and other international organizations, and civil society and to contribute to fostering coordination of efforts.
