DOALOS/UNITAR Briefing on Current Issues in Ocean Affairs and Law of the Sea

Objective:
In advance of the events held at United Nations Headquarters to celebrate World Oceans Day (8 June 2009), the briefing co-organized by the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DOALOS) / Office of Legal Affairs, and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) provided an overview of upcoming meetings in the field of law of the sea (24th Session of the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf; 19th Meeting of States Parties; 10th meeting of the United Nations Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea) as well as on issues of current relevance, such as the assessment of assessments, climate change and the oceans, and piracy and armed robbery against ships off the coast of Somalia. In addition, the briefing provided information on the capacity building activities carried out by DOALOS, with a view to facilitating access to them on the part of developing States.
