PEACEMAKING AND CONFLICT PREVENTION

The Peacemaking and Conflict Prevention (PMCP) Programme addresses a strategic need within the UN System to deliver innovative training in negotiation and mediation, and to share the latest knowledge, tools and experience for the prevention and resolution of conflict. Intensive training programmes are organized for mid and senior level officials within Member States, regional organizations and the United Nations, and for the representatives of indigenous peoples.

15 September 2014, Geneva, Switzerland - With the number of refugees and internally displaced persons now higher than at any time since World War II, efforts to strengthen capacities for the prevention of violent conflict and the peaceful settlement of disputes are needed now more than ever. This was the conclusion of the eminent panel of speakers at the “Training Peacemakers” event held at the United Nations Office in Geneva Library on 15 September.

“The UNITAR Training Programme has helped many indigenous leaders. It changed my life.” - Kanyinke Sena, Chair United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

Mr. Kanyinke Sena, a lawyer, human rights and environmental advocate from Kenya, was appointed Chairperson of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues during the twelfth session at United Nations Headquarters in New York earlier this year. Mr. Sena said his advocacy began in 2005 when he participated in the UNITAR training programme on conflict prevention and peacemaking for indigenous representatives.

This year marked the twentieth anniversary of the UNITAR-IPI Fellowship Programme in Peacemaking and Preventive Diplomacy, established by Dr. Connie Peck in 1993, following her tenure as a Special Consultant to the Australian Foreign Minister, Gareth Evans. The purpose of the consultancy was to make proposals for strengthening peacemaking and preventive diplomacy within the United Nations.
