Portia Simpson Miller becomes new Prime Minister of Jamaica

Portia Simpson MillerThe Institute expresses its sincere congratulations to The Most Honorable Portia Simpson Miller, following the successful results of her Party at the General Elections of 29 December 2011 and her inauguration as the new Prime Minister of Jamaica on 5 January 2012. Prior to her first premiership from 2006-2007, she has occupied a number of ministerial appointments, including Minister of Local Government and Sport (2002-2006); Minister of Tourism and Sports (2000-2002); and Minister of Labor, Social Security and Sports (1995-2000).

In January 2011, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed The Most Honorable Simpson Miller to the Institute’s Board of Trustees. She previously served as a trustee for the Institute’s Atlanta-based International Training Centre for Local Authorities (CIFAL). The Institute extends its warm wishes as she begins her second tenure in office.
