ENVIRONMENT UNIT
UNITAR’s Environment Unit works to strengthen the capacity of Member States, Organizations and individuals to address environmental challenges and reach sustainable goals through innovative training approaches, deliveries and methods.
CHEMICALS AND WASTE MANAGEMENT
The Chemicals and Waste Management Programme supports governments and stakeholders to strengthen their institutional, technical, and legal infrastructure and capacity for sound chemicals management.
CLIMATE CHANGE
The Climate Change Programme builds and develops the capacity of various actors primarily in developing countries. The Climate Change Programme acts in accordance with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) process. It builds countries’ institutional and human capacity to address the effects of climate change.
BIO DIVERSITY
The Biodiversity Programme is engaged in supporting governments, organizations, and stakeholders in developing capacity to respond to the global biodiversity challenge. The Programme’s activities are organized in the framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and in cooperation with Heads of Agencies Task Force on the 2010 Biodiversity Target.
ENVIRONMENTAL GOVERANCE AND LAW
The Environmental Governance Programme develops methodologies, facilitates research, and provides project support and training to reinforce capacities for governmental and non-governmental stakeholders in environmental policymaking and execution.

GOVERNANCE UNIT
UNITAR’s Governance Unit contributes to achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) of poverty reduction and governance agenda through developing the capacities of public and private sector officials from Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and transition economies to appropriately address a wide range of governance issues.
E-GOVERNANCE
The E-Governance Programme supports the public sector’s use of information and communication technologies (ICT) with the aspiration to improve information and services, encourage the public’s contribution to the decision-making process, and making government more responsible and effectual.
LOCAL DEVELOPMENT
The Local Development Programme (LDP) was initiated as a result of the World Summit on Sustainable Development organised in Johannesburg in 2002, which acknowledged the key role of partnerships between the United Nations, civil society and academia, local authorities and the private sector in the advancement and successful realization of the sustainable development agenda. The key objective of LDP is to develop the capacity of local actors, through exchange of experiences and dissemination of best practices, as an effective way of achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and reducing poverty at local level.
The Public Finance and Trade Programme (PFT) aims at enhancing the capacity of United Nations Member States and other stakeholders to address international challenges in the areas of public financial management, international trade, and intellectual property issues.
Past Chair of the Global Migration Group, UNITAR actively supports the global inter-governmental process of dialogue and the sharing of ideas and practices on international migration and development initiated with the 2006 UN High Level Dialogue, and continued through the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD).

PEACE, SECURITY, AND DIPLOMACY UNIT
UNITAR’s Peace, Security and Diplomacy (PSD) Unit addresses the capacity needs of Member States to support the United Nations in meeting its objectives of world peace, security and diplomacy through activities such as International Law, Multilateral Diplomacy, Peacemaking, Conflict Prevention and Peacekeeping.
INTERNATIONAL LAW PROGRAMME
The International Law Programme (ILP) strives to promote better knowledge and understanding of international law and standards among practitioners to uphold the global respect of international principles.
MULTILATERAL DIPLOMACY PROGRAMME
Training on Multilateral Diplomacy (MDP) focuses on raising awareness and developing broader knowledge for diplomats and other government officials to perform effectively in the multilateral working environment.
PEACEMAKING AND CONFLICT PREVENTION
The Peacemaking and Conflict Prevention (PMCP) Programme addresses a strategic need within the UN System to deliver innovative training in negotiation and mediation, and to share the latest knowledge, tools and experience for the prevention and resolution of conflict. Intensive training programmes are organized for mid and senior level officials within Member States, regional organizations and the United Nations, and for the representatives of indigenous peoples.
PEACEKEEPING TRAINING PROGRAMME
Newly added to UNITAR’s list of leading-edge training programmes, the Peacekeeping Training Programme (PTP) offers innovative learning opportunities to prepare prospective civilian, military and police personnel to serve in peacekeeping missions around the world.

RESEARCH UNIT
UNITAR’s Research Department is dedicated to the development of innovative approaches, methodologies, tools and required skills, as well as their practical applications on a variety of learning settings. The Department also provides state-of-the-art services to UN Member States and the global humanitarian community.
UNITAR’S OPERATIONAL SATELLITE APPLICATIONS PROGRAMME (UNOSAT)
UNOSAT is a technology intensive programme active in all aspects of applied research relating to satellite solutions, from earth observation to telecommunication, positioning and navigation. UNOSAT delivers satellite solutions, geographic information to organizations within and outside the UN system to make a difference in the lives of communities exposed to poverty, hazards, and conflict, or affected by humanitarian and other crises.
KNOWLEDGE SYSTEMS INNOVATION
With a strong focus on research, the Knowledge Systems Innovation (KSI) team at UNITAR continuously contributes to the innovation and implementation of learning strategies, methodologies and policies. KSI also focuses on the use of state-of-the-art instructional design methods, technologies, quality and the diversification of learning settings.
MONITORING AND EVALUATION SECTION
M&E aims to strengthen the Institute's resource efficiency, effectiveness and accountability in delivering results. The Section also works to enhance organizational learning for improved relevance and impact of its programme interventions.
