Regional Training Workshop on Climate Change Education Brings together Participants from 13 Countries
26-29 May 2014, Boca Chica, Dominican Republic - The UN CC:Learn programme in the Dominican Republic has developed a national programme for training teachers on climate change, with support by UNITAR and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). To strengthen this initiative and reach out to other countries in Central America and the Caribbean, the National Council on Climate Change (CNCCMDL) and the Teachers Training Institute of the Ministry of Education (INAFOCAM) hosted a four-day regional workshop, 26-29 May 2014 in Boca Chica. The event was organized by UNESCO as part of a series of training workshops held in different regions around the world.
The workshop brought together 35 educators from 13 Central American and Caribbean countries. Participants were trained on methodologies for teaching climate change in and outside the classroom. The workshop included a session at the beach of Boca Chica during which participants measured the size of the beach and interviewed a variety of locals, including fishermen and restaurant and hotel owners, to determine the quality of the water, the future impact of climate change as well as environmental changes that have already occurred over time.
