Finalizing a series of successful negotiations between UNITAR, the Special Self-Governing Province of Jeju and the International Peace Foundation (IPF) – started mid 2009 – M. Carlos Lopes, Executive Director of UNITAR, will be visiting the island of Jeju (Republic of South Korea) from March 30th to March 31th.
The purpose of this mission is to sign the partnership agreement between UNITAR and International Peace Foundation for the establishment of CIFAL Jeju and to sign a Memorandum of Understanding between UNITAR and the Special Self-Governing Province of Jeju.
 
As a new member of the worldwide CIFAL Network, CIFAL Jeju will provide face-to-face training activities to local authorities in the Asia and Pacific region focusing on environment, including climate change, and human security. As an information hub and platform for promoting city-to-city cooperation, the centre will particularly help countries from the region to learn and gain from the Republic of Korea’s experience in these areas.
 
With this new CIFAL, The Local Development Programme of UNITAR will be able to better respond the needs of beneficiaries from local authorities and actors in the Asia and Pacific region and to strengthen its global knowledge sharing network.
 
Prior to the signing ceremony, M. Carlos Lopes will meet on March 29th, in Seoul, with M. Shin Dong-ik, Director General for International Organizations Bureau at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MOFAT) and the Vice President of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), M. Yu Ji Eun, to discuss further cooperation between UNITAR and the Republic of South Korea.
