Women in Diplomacy
What challenges do women face in diplomacy today and how can we work together when applying a gender perspective in national and international arenas?
These are some of the questions that delegates, government officials, NGO professionals and negotiators from all over the world discussed in the Online Discussion Forum focusing on Women in Diplomacy.
Building the Capacity for Women to Negotiate Peace Agreements
Although women worldwide are uniquely and disproportionately victimized by war and violence, women make up only 2.4 percent of all signatories to the 21 major peace agreements established during the past 20 years.
UNITAR has taken over a pioneer role in the UN system, setting up a skills-building workshop series for women diplomats dedicated to promote and enhance their capacities as negotiators for peace.
Increase in Female Participation in Afghanistan Fellowship Programme
UNITAR has been conducting the Afghanistan Fellowship Programme since 2004, aiming at enhancing the leadership, management and professional skills of a core group of senior government officials primarily from Afghanistan. Seeing a rise in female participation from an average of 10% in the first 6 years of the programme to 18% in 2011 is a significant improvement given the status of women in that country.
Gender Equality in UNITAR
Already in 2008, UNITAR became one of two UN entities to achieve gender parity among staff and collaborators.
