Building Capacities of Youth

According to the Office of the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth, there are about 1.8 billion young people between the ages of 10 and 24, which is the largest youth population ever before.  This creates unprecedented potential for economic and social progress.

However, many of these young people are in developing countries and lack of information, and face other economic and social challenges.

To address this issue, UNITAR has been building capacity of youth through different types of activities.  Here are a few examples of our offers for young population.

How is UNITAR Building Capacity for Young People on Entrepreneurship?

The Sustainable Development Goals, which will guide the Development Agenda for the next 15 years, highlight the necessity to substantially reduce the proportion of youth not in employment by 2020. UNITAR has been working on capacity building programmes on entrepreneurship for young people since 2011. The Institute and OpenLab, an NGO based in Brazil, which aims to create opportunities for human development.

Young Peacebuilders in the Making

In 2015, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted resolution 2250 on "Youth, Peace and Security" which urges UN Member States to include and empower youth in decision-making at all levels and to build mechanisms that enable young people to participate meaningfully in peace processes and dispute resolution. The im!pact for peace training series developed through UNITAR's Peacekeeping Training Programme is helping put resolution 2250 into practice.

Youth Climate Dialogues Awarded on Occasion of International Mother Earth Day

Kantonsschule am Burggraben students from St. Gallen, Switzerland received an award for their initiatives on Youth Climate Dialogues. They took part in the pilot Youth Climate Dialogue in November 2015 and prepared a peer-to-peer real-time online discussion on climate change with girls of the Lilongwe Secondary School in Malawi.
