Building Capacities of Youth

According to the Office of the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth, there are about 1.8 billion young people between the ages of 10 and 24, which is the largest youth population ever before. This creates unprecedented potential for economic and social progress.

However, many of these young people are in developing countries and lack of information, and face other economic and social challenges.

To address this issue, UNITAR has been building capacity of youth through different types of activities. Here are a few examples of our offers for young population.

How is UNITAR Building Capacity for Young People on Entrepreneurship?

The Sustainable Development Goals, which will guide the Development Agenda for the next 15 years, highlight the necessity to substantially reduce the proportion of youth not in employment by 2020. UNITAR has been working on capacity building programmes on entrepreneurship for young people since 2011. The Institute and OpenLab, an NGO based in Brazil, which aims to create opportunities for human development.

Diplomatic Training Programme for Youth Ambassadors

Although much of the work of UNITAR's Multilateral Diplomacy Programme (MDP) often focuses on the skills development of mid to senior-level diplomats based both in capital as well as in major United Nations locations, many of our recent events have increasingly been geared towards training young professionals.

Young Peacebuilders in the Making

In 2015, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted resolution 2250 on "Youth, Peace and Security" which urges UN Member States to include and empower youth in decision-making at all levels and to build mechanisms that enable young people to participate meaningfully in peace processes and dispute resolution. The im!pact for peace training series developed through UNITAR's Peacekeeping Training Programme is helping put resolution 2250 into practice.

UNOSAT Encourages Girls to Consider Tech Career Choices

When you are young, you imagine what your future could be and think about eventual career choices. Believe it or not, we still face numerous barriers when it comes time to choose a career path. One of them is linked to the high number of stereotypes based on gender. Many still think that women are more suited for the arts and support roles while men are better suited for math and engineering.

Youth Climate Dialogues Awarded on Occasion of International Mother Earth Day

Kantonsschule am Burggraben students from St. Gallen, Switzerland received an award for their initiatives on Youth Climate Dialogues. They took part in the pilot Youth Climate Dialogue in November 2015 and prepared a peer-to-peer real-time online discussion on climate change with girls of the Lilongwe Secondary School in Malawi.

UN CC:Learn e-Tutorial on Climate Budgeting is now available in Khmer!

UN CC:Learn e-tutorial Climate Responsive Budgeting for Sectors has been recently translated into Khmer. This e-tutorial provides an introduction to how governments can respond to the climate change challenge through better budgeting. It also introduces and explains a new approach to integrating climate change risks and opportunities into budget preparation.

Inter-agency Capacity Development Proposal at the UNEA-2 in Nairobi
