Structure, Retrieval and Use of United Nations documentation in New York
28-30 June 2011, New York, USA. The UNITAR New York Office, jointly with the with the Dag Hammarskjöld Library and in cooperation with the Office of Legal Affairs organized a Workshop on the structure, retrieval and use of United Nations documentation at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
According to the evaluation questionnaires, the workshop was a success and most of the respondents were completely satisfied. All the participants stated that they would recommend the workshop to a colleague.
The first meeting of the first session has been devoted to an overview of the documentation of the United Nations by Mr. Jean Gazarian, Senior Fellow, Coordinator, Training programme for Permanent Missions at UNITAR in New York and to an introduction to the Dag Hammarskjöld Library by Ms. Maritina Paniagua, Coordinator, Reference Services, Dag Hammarskjöld Library. At the second meeting, the participants have heard presentations on the information provided electronically by Mr. Andrei Kolomoets, Information Management Officer from the Treaty Section and by Mr. Luigi Santosuosso, Officer from the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea.
- The second session was devoted to instruction by Ms. Joëlle Sciboz, Librarian, Resources and Services for Delegates at the Dag Hammarskjöld Library, on the various resources for information retrieval.
All in all, the evaluations highlight the success of the workshop. It not only provided highly valuable information to the participants, but it also gave an opportunity to meet new colleagues. One participant emphasized that the workshop was extremely helpful since it provided a complex level of understanding over a multitude of topics. As one respondent summarized, “It was my second workshop and the practice was great. Thank you for the good work.” In written comments, participants underlined the importance of power point presentations and dialogue with the speakers.
