With the goal of scaling up learning on SCP in the Asia and Pacific region and providing policy-makers with a comprehensive introduction to the SCP concept and application opportunities, UNITAR has teamed up with the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) to develop and deliver the e-learning course “Introduction to Sustainable Consumption and Production in Asia”. The course development and delivery has been supported by the SWITCH-Asia Programme of the European Union.

This is the first e-learning course of its kind and is developed specifically for use in the Asia-Pacific context. The course is designed to assist policymakers from the region in developing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating policies supporting a transition towards SCP. The content draws on the manual “Sustainable Consumption and Production: A Handbook for Policy Makers”, developed by UNEP, and a number of other relevant publications on SCP.

The pilot edition brought together more than 50 representatives from the government sector, civil society, and academia, coming from 20 different countries. The course is now being delivered for two more editions (in 2015 and 2016) and has already reached over 110 SCP practitioners in Asia. Evaluations show that the course is effective in developing the capacities of its target audience - certification rates are 87% on average and an overwhelming majority of alumni found it useful and relevant to their work.

Following interest from other regions UNITAR and UNEP have scaled-up this partnership, with the goal of delivering more dedicated regional trainings on SCP. The first e-learning course with focus on Asia is currently being adapted to the context of the African and Latin American regions. A total of three regional course on SCP will be delivered in English, Spanish and French language throughout 2016.
