UN Secretary-General Engages in Dialogue with his Special Representatives
11 - 13 May, 2012 - United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon addressed heads of UN peace missions and peacekeeping operations around the world at the Eighth Seminar for Special and Personal Representatives of the Secretary-General (SRSG) held 11 - 13 May, 2012.
In a dialogue session to discuss priorities and strategies, the Secretary-General recognized the crucial and challenging work being carried out by his senior United Nations peacemakers and stressed the critical importance of preventive diplomacy. Fifty officials including the Head of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, the Head of the Department of Political Affairs, and the Special and Personal Representatives and Envoys of the Secretary-General from around the world took part in a high-level knowledge and experience-sharing exchange to enhance UN practice.
African Union Peace and Security Commissioner Ramtane Lamamra and senior officials from the United Nations Development Programme and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights also contributed to the deliberations. The SRSG Seminar was hosted by Carlos Lopes, Executive Director of UNITAR and Director of the United Nations System Staff College. The high-level meeting was made possible through the support of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Sweden.
