The Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) Executive Director, Domingos Simões Pereira, and UNITAR Executive Director, Carlos Lopes, signed a cooperation agreement on 30th July at CPLP Headquarter, in Lisbon.
The Memorandum of Understanding includes common areas of interest to jointly develop and implement projects that aim to develop local capacities in Portuguese speaking countries.

UNITAR and CPLP identified the following thematic areas of work and agreed to cooperate in the implementation of capacity development actions in the field of Human Rights with the objective of creating and executing programs in order to raise awareness among target population in international Human Rights mechanisms. The agreement also addresses Environmental projects with a focus on programmes of capacity development related to the implementation of International Environmental Law, desertification and climate change.

Programmes to strengthen institutional capacity should also be put in place to reinforce Public Administration in Portuguese speaking countries. The agreement points out the need to implement programme in leadership capacities building for young leaders through sustainable leadership capacity development and innovation in the field of Public Policies. In this sense, the MoU suggests to foster the capacity of recently graduated students with the creation of internship programs to be offered by institutions associated to the CPLP
The agreement was followed by a work lunch in which several Portuguese media (radios, newspapers and TV) took part as well as a press conference with Portuguese, Angolan and Brazilian media.
