Thursday 6 August saw Hiroshima mark the 64th Anniversary of the dropping of the Atomic Bomb. The official ceremony, which took place in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park was attended by some 45,000 people. The programme included the Peace Declaration by the Mayor of Hiroshima, Dr. Tadatoshi Akiba and addresses by the Prime Minister of Japan, Mr. Taro Aso, the Governor of Hiroshima, Mr. Yuzan Fujita as well as messages from the President of the United Nations General Assembly Mr. Miguel d’Escoto Brockmann as well as from the Secretary General of the United Nations, delivered by  UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Mr. Sergio Duarte.

   

UNITAR staff attended the official ceremonies, and later in the day the Institute hosted 56 students from 17 countries for a presentation entitled "Different Paths to Peace: A Perspective from the United Nations" by Nassrine Azimi. The students were attending the 2009 Session of Hiroshima City University's Intensive Summer course entitled "Hiroshima and Peace."
