29 April 2013, Geneva, Switzerland – In cooperation with the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), UNITAR contributed to the training of staff members of the National Assembly of Nigeria. The tailor-made training responded to the desire to enhance staff’s writing skills and to empower them to act as trainers for their colleagues in the National Assembly on the same matter.
The training, which took place from 22 to 26 April 2013 at the IPU Headquarters in Geneva, was based on a collaboration between the IPU, the Nigerian Government, and UNITAR. Through the training, 10 senior parliamentary staff members have been equipped with the skills to produce high quality resolutions, communiqués, memoranda, reports, policy briefs, and other written communications. This communicative and highly interactive training was based on hands-on exercises related to examples relevant to the Nigerian National Assembly context.
In line with the “Training of Trainers” approach of UNITAR, the Nigerian participants were trained to serve as multiplicators for their fellow colleagues at the National Assembly. In this way, a cadre of staff with similar skills will be built by passing on the knowledge acquired during the training.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union and UNITAR will further build on developing this productive cooperation. Moreover, UNITAR will be developing its programme in this field with the creation of a new course on analytical reporting.
