UNITAR Executive Director visits Tokyo and Hiroshima, meets with Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan
The meeting took place during a reception in Dr. Lopes' honour on 28 March 2012. Attended by over 20 Ambassadors, the reception was graciously hosted by the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to Japan, H.E. Dr. Sayed Mohammad Amin Fatimie. The Tokyo leg of Dr. Lopes schedule also saw him visit the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq, as well as meeting with the Senior Vice-President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), H.E. Kenzo Oshima, to discuss future cooperation between UNITAR and JICA.
Upon journeying to Hiroshima Dr. Lopes visited the UNITAR Hiroshima Office, while also meeting with the Governor of Hiroshima Prefecture, the Honourable Hidehiko Yuzaki. The meeting saw a new Memorandum of Understanding signed between UNITAR and the Prefecture which continues the strong relationship enjoyed by the two entities since the UNITAR Office opened in the eternally resonant city in 2003.
Dr. Lopes also met with the Mayor of Hiroshima City, the Honourable Mr. Kazumi Matsui, and, following the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding with Hiroshima's Shudo University, delivered the 70th UNITAR Hiroshima Public Session, entitled "Challenges to Multilateral Diplomacy."
