UNITAR facilitates South-South networking and knowledge sharing in diplomacy training
Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, 10 – 11 June 2009
UNITAR, with support from the Government of Italy and in partnership with the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, assisted the Congolese Diplomatic Academy (DRC) in convening the Second Meeting of the African Chapter of the International Forum on Diplomatic Training.
Opened by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the meeting received high-level attendance with more than 20 directors and other representatives from 11 African diplomatic academies and institutes (Algeria, Angola, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Mozambique, South Africa, Sudan, and Zimbabwe). During the two-day meeting, participants exchanged experiences, shared knowledge and discussed contemporary challenges in the field of diplomatic training. Participants examined in particular the relevance of development and economic diplomacy in connection with the current economic and financial crisis, as well as the ongoing peacekeeping and post conflict reconstruction challenges in Africa and the relationship to diplomacy training and curriculum development.
The meeting concluded with the adoption of the Kinshasa Declaration, in which the participating organizations formalized the establishment of the African Chapter and renewed their commitment to sharing experiences and promoting partnership building and other forms of collaboration in view of strengthening Foreign Service training in Africa. The results of the meeting will provide input into the 2009 Meeting of the International Forum on Diplomatic Training, scheduled to take place in Vienna in September.
The 2010 meeting of the African Chapter will be hosted by the Institut Diplomatique et des Relations Internationales, in Algiers, Algeria.
