UNITAR Events at the 6th World Urban Forum in Naples Next Week
15 August 2012, Geneva, Switzerland - Organized jointly by UN-Habitat, the Government of Italy, the Campania Region and the City of Naples, the VI World Urban Forum (WUF) will take place in Naples, Italy, from the 1st to the 7th of September on the theme "The Urban Future".
The WUF was established by the United Nations to examine one of the most pressing problems facing the world today: rapid urbanization and its impact on communities, cities, economies, climate change and policies. In parallel with a main dialogue sessions, 160 training, networking and side events will be hosted along with a large exhibition to showcase some of the world's leading innovations in urban development. 
The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) will be present at the Forum with a variety of training and learning events.
UNITAR’s participation will focus on a variety of key topics including: urban planning and design with UNOSAT, Wikicities, green cities and transition towns, and financing urban development and basic services, among other topics.  
An overview of the learning events organized by UNITAR in collaboration with a variety of partners, is found below.

UNITAR Programmes Participating at the World Urban Forum
Local Development Programme was created in 2002 to respond to this challenge through capacity development and training for local governments and local actors globally (Executive Mayors, Municipal Managers, Regional Government Ministries, Community Development Managers, NGOs…) to achieve sustainable local development. In 2011, the programme reached over 7,500 beneficiaries through 79 learning events, including: Face-to-Face seminars, conferences and workshops, e-Learning courses, Blended learning, Knowledge Facilitation Services (Network Weaving, Knowledge Sharing).
Public Finance and Trade Programme develops and delivers training and capacity development activities on a variety of priority topics for local governments such as municipal finance, financing of infrastructure development projects, and urban debt management. The Programme draws on many years of experience in strengthening the knowledge and skills of middle and senior level officials from around the world. It relies on an active network of renowned international experts and practitioners who have a wealth of practical experience. During the 2010-2011 Biennium, the Public Finance and Trade Programme trained a total of 3,569 beneficiaries through over 150 learning and networking events, including e-Learning courses, e-Discussions, blended courses, face-to-face workshops, and high-level conferences and fora. 
UNOSAT is a technology intensive programme active in all aspects of applied research in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), satellite solutions, from earth observation to telecommunication, positioning and navigation. UNOSAT delivers GIS Solutions to organizations within and outside the UN system to build resilience in urban management/planning, while improving the lives of communities exposed to poverty, hazards, and conflict.
UNITAR’s participation at the WUF provides the opportunity to host face-to-face meetings with stakeholders from UN, governments, private companies, and civil society and develop UNITAR’s local development network.
