A Report of the Secretary-General on the status of women in the UN System (A/63/364) issued in September reveals that UNITAR is among the two UN organizations that have met the 50/50 gender balance goal set by the UN General Assembly. Out of 29 organizations of the UN System that have submitted data for 2004 – 2007, UNITAR, together with UNFPA, is the only UN body to have reached a percentage of women staff at the Professional and higher categories of 50% or above. The Report, which also analyzes gender balance in the United Nations Secretariat, warns that the pace of progress towards the goal of gender parity has been markedly slow and strongly recommends that the trend be addressed.
