24 April 2013, Geneva, Switzerland - Another good initiative that will contribute to promoting peace in the world: the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for World Peace. UNITAR was honored by the invitation to provide a keynote speech at this first World Peace Award Forum named after the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Vice-President and Ruler of Dubai. The event that brought together several governmental, non governmental and international on organizations was held in Dubai from 17 - 18 April 2013.
In the keynote speech, UNITAR reminded the distinguished audience about the ultimate goal of the United Nations, which is to prevent and resolve international conflicts and help build a culture of peace in and throughout the world. The Forum was also reminded that UNITAR was established in the light of the UN charter “for the purpose of enhancing the effectiveness of the United Nations in achieving the major objectives of the Organization through extensive training and research.”
It was clearly pointed out that in order to meet today’s challenges, there is a need, not only for continued political, military, and financial commitment, but also to collectively reform the peacekeeping and peacebuilding tools to make them more effective by ensuring that women and men are fully and well-trained in order to be prepared to face up to the increasingly complex tasks that they are expected to deal with in peace operations.
Organisers and panellists welcomed the UNITAR contribution towards addressing the emerging capacity development needs of beneficiaries within Member States and the United Nations System through the Training of Trainers’ initiative that brings to the national and regional Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding Training Centres up-to-date knowledge and best practices in an efficient and cost-effective manner. The Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for World Peaceis a noble initiative that will contribute to promote world peace.
