On the occasion of the 4th World Urban Forum which took place in Nanjing , China , from the 3rd to the 6th of November, the Local Development Programme of UNITAR presented two of its initiatives launched jointly with other partners.

The first one consisted in an expert meeting on access to basic services for all, where more than 30 experts met, including representatives of other United Nations bodies, representatives of international associations of local authorities and experts from different regions representing the different public and private stakeholders involved in the provision of basic services.
After very rich exchanges, participants approved the general content of a guidelines under preparation and provided the last recommendations. The final version of the manual will be presented to the Committee of the Permanent Representatives to UN-HABITAT early 2009 for the intergovernmental discussion.

The second initiative dealt with the presentation of the UNITAR – UNESCAP – INWENT new distance learning Course on “Sector Governance in Urban Sanitation”. It was presented during the session on innovative water and sanitation practices and approaches to build urban infrastructure and deliver environmental services in Asian cities, organized by UNESCAP and Citynet. Practioners and decision makers from Asian and Pacific cities discovered the 4 modules and the platform which will be used by the first participants early 2009.
