UNITAR partners with OHCHR to offer Human Rights Briefing for diplomats at UN Headquarters
Wednesday 4 March and Thursday 5 March 2009
United Nations Headquarters, New York
The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), in collaboration with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), is holding its first Human Rights Briefing for members of Permanent Missions accredited to UN offices and embassies in New York. The course is part of a series of human rights briefings. The other training sessions are held in Geneva and Addis Abeba.
Taking place prior to the tenth regular session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, the Briefing aims at enhancing diplomats’ understanding of the international human rights protection system and strengthening their skills for an effective performance of their human rights related functions.
The Briefing will cover the structure and functioning of the Human Rights Council, other international mechanisms and procedures for the protection and promotion of human rights, the work of the General Assembly, the Security Council and activities of other UN organs in relation to human rights, the mandate and functioning of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the United Nations human rights normative framework and key human rights policies underlying the work of the United Nations.
While the briefing will be conducted in English, interpretation in French will also be provided for the entire duration of the briefing.
