UNITAR showcased its work to Geneva poplutation on United Nations at Geneva Open Day 2012
15 September 2012, Geneva, Switzerland – The United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) opened its doors to the local population of Geneva as a form of “Open Day” last Saturday. According to UNOG, some 9,000 people visited the Palais des Nations and the Ariana Park. The main objective of the Open Day was to showcase the diverse work of the United Nations system in Geneva to the general public. This year also coincides with the 10th anniversary of Switzerland becoming a United Nations member state.
UNITAR participated in the Open Day by organizing 3 events:
1. “UNITAR exhibition stand” to raise awareness of UNITAR activities among Geneva public and the diplomatic community
2. “Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) demonstration” by UNOSAT
3. Screening of the documentary “Mandated to Protect -- Protection of Civilians in Peacekeeping Operations” at the UNOG Cinema
The UAV demonstration was part of the VIP guided tour programme, which was headed by the UNOG Director General. Some 40 VIPs, including government officials from Swiss and Geneva authorities, heads of UN agencies and Ambassadors, listened to the explanation of how UAVs are used in a real life situation, watched the quadrochopter taking off from the ground, and enjoyed the view from the sky on a large screen placed in the tent.
At the UNITAR stand, interested public took home various programme brochures, asked questions, and left their email addresses to receive UNITAR e-Newsletters and course announcements.
