28 October – 01 November 2013, Geneva, Switzerland - UNITAR supports the fifth edition of a Senior Level Course on “Enhancing Leadership for Peacebuilding” delivered by the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) in partnership with Interpeace and on behalf of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland. This course provides an opportunity for current and potential leaders to enhance their understanding of sustainable peacebuilding and leadership styles.

This course builds on the idea that although the body of knowledge about peacebuilding is growing, a lack of clarity about what makes peacebuilding effective, persists. Therefore this senior-level course aims at creating an environment in which participants can share and take stock of lessons learned. It brings together representatives from organizations actively involved in peacebuilding, ranging from national institutions, civil society, including amongst others traditional and religious leaders, NGOs and women’s groups as well as international organizations.

Whilst it is essential to work on successful strategies when it comes to peacebuilding, personalities also matter. This is why the course furthermore focuses on exploring leadership styles and skills that support dealing effectively with peacebuilding challenges. In order to achieve this objective, the course uses three unique methodologies: peer advice, substantive imputes, and exercises/skill development.

UNITAR’s Peacekeeping Training Programme and Geneva Centre for Security Policy will continue their fruitful partnership, joining efforts to contributing to more effective peace missions.
