UNITAR and MapAction sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)

Nigel Press (left) and Francesco Pisano (right) signing MoUDecember 22, Geneva, Switzerland – On Wednesday 16 December UNITAR and MapAction met to sign a MoU. Liz Hughes, MapAction Chief Executive, Nigel Press, Chairman of MapAction Board of Trustees, Einar Bjorgo, UNOSAT Manager and Francesco Pisano, UNITAR Research Department Director, acting as Officer in Charge, gathered in UNITAR’s offices for this important moment.

This MoU, defines the frame for future cooperation between UNITAR’s UNOSAT programme and MapAction.

“We are very pleased to see this MoU in place as it paves the way for great synergy between our two entities, combining MapAction’s field presence with UNOSAT’s remote analysis through an effective humanitarian partnership”, said UNOSAT’s manager, Einar Bjorgo.

“This agreement will allow both organizations to contribute to improved coordination during humanitarian disasters, and also to ensure timely exchange of data to the benefit of the affected countries and humanitarian relief teams on the ground,” explained Liz Hughes, MapAction Chief Executive.

UNOSAT builds on significant technical and thematic expertise developed since 2001 in humanitarian mapping to generate solutions through satellite imagery analysis, integrated Geographic Information Systems (GIS) solutions design, and geo-positioning, improving the capabilities of agencies and national beneficiaries.
     
  • In the aftermath of disaster, MapAction delivers vital information in mapped form, from data gathered at the scene. MapAction’s volunteer service is available at short notice, 365 days a year, deploying a fully trained and equipped humanitarian mapping and information management team anywhere in the world, often within just hours.
