New internship opportunities open up as UNOSAT output grows
10 February 2012, Geneva, Switzerland - Fuelled by its data-in-hand strategy, UNOSAT’s production capability is growing steadily. The number of products, maps and analyses, rolled out by the Programme has been growing since 2009 with peaks in 2010 and 2011. In addition, UNOSAT’s efforts in research and innovation have produced integrated solutions (vehicle tracking and navigation) and novel approaches (collaborative mapping, web based damage assessment solutions).
To support its growth UNOSAT relies on know-how, equipment, and first of all dedicated people. The increase in the number of analysts and geo-database experts is creating more opportunities for internship and traineeship. From 2 interns per year in 2008, the Programme has opened 5 intern and 2 trainee positions. These new positions are part of a new workflow model that integrates the work done by interns in operations run at UNOSAT. This enhances the output of the Programme while providing interns with a real hands-on operational experience in humanitarian rapid mapping, human rights monitoring and human security analysis.
Interns and trainees selected to join the UNOSAT Team are required to possess proven skills in GIS, remote sensing or database management and they are completely integrated in the team after short inception training.
