Uppsala (Sweden) 10 June 2010: At the occasion of a lecture by Dr. Carlos Lopes, UNITAR and the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation (DHF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding. As a first step into the cooperation, UNITAR and DHF are looking to organizing a lecture series to be held in Uppsala, New York/Geneva and in Africa on topics related to peace and security.

  As part of the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation renewed focus on United Nations related matters, Dr. Carlos Lopes, Executive Director of UNITAR, delivered a lecture titled “Perspectives on African Development”. Discussants included Prof. Göran Hydén former chairperson of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, Ambassador Sten Rylander, Prof. Lars Rudebeck from the Uppsala University's Centre for Sustainable Development and Prof. Fatu Cheru, research director of the Nordic Africa Institute.   The visit of Dr. Carlos Lopes to Uppsala was also an opportunity for UNITAR to refresh and update the exchange and consultation with the State Secretary of the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, as well as with the Department for Security Policies.
