15 December 2014, Malé, Maldives – A Midterm Project Workshop for the implementation of the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) in the Maldives was held in Malé on 12-13 November 2014, with the participation of UNITAR. Under the framework of a national project for the implementation of the SAICM initiative, the workshop included a review of project progress to date and discussion and planning on next steps.
The workshop included opening remarks from the Minister of State for Environment and Energy, Mr. Mohamed Ibrahim and the Minister of State for Defence and National Security, Mr. Mohamed Zuhair. To facilitate project implementation and sound chemicals management, the Ministers then signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the two Ministries to develop a national chemicals management database, which will include, inter alia, regularly recorded data on: chemical import, storage, transport, use, and disposal; permit details; toxicology; and accident response measures.
The workshop was attended by 27 representatives of government and non-governmental organizations, from a wide range of sectors. The workshop assessed the progress made on the development of a National Chemicals Management Profile, national chemicals management database, and national SAICM implementation plan as well as implementation of partnership projects. Particular attention was given to national priority issues including legislation, awareness raising, and disposal practices. Training on the IOMC Toolbox for Decision-making in Chemicals Management was also provided. Follow-up activities and working group meetings are planned for the first quarter of 2015 to further develop the National Profile, national chemicals management database, and national SAICM implementation plan, and to strengthen national governance for sound chemicals management.
The workshop was hosted by the Ministry of State for Environment and Energy and Ministry of State for Defence and National Security, with technical support provided by UNITAR, and financial support provided by SAICM’s Quick Start Programme Trust Fund.
