19 November 2018, Mexico City, Mexico – UNITAR organized a training workshop on Conference Diplomacy and Multilateral Negotiations for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico. This was an interactive and practical workshop designed to train the participants’ skills in various activities, using current global issues and debates as examples for simulations.

The first day’s training activities were led by Mr. Rabih El-Haddad (Director, Division for Multilateral Diplomacy, UNITAR).  The first activity was a simulation exercise on oil pricing, in which participants were given the chance to practice their existing negotiation skills and assess their current level. The afternoon was then spent on group work, which was a theoretical coverage of the pillars of interest-based negotiations. The day wrapped up with presentations on the activities of the afternoon.

The activities of the second day were given by H.E. Mr. Lars Tillfors, former Ambassador with a long experience in International Relations and Development Cooperation, United Nations Diplomacy, and others. During this session, participants took part in two simulation exercises that involved drafting and debating a statement and multilateral negotiations.

The participants gave highly satisfactory feedback for the event, having pointed out in particular the high relevance of the workshop for their endeavours in their future work.
