Algerian Diplomats Trained on Multilateral Negotiations and Diplomacy in New York

UN General Assembly, New York16 – 19 December 2014, New York, U.S.A. – At the headquarters of the United Nations, thousands of meetings are convened every year. It is in New York where multilateral negotiations on our world’s biggest challenges are taking place, and it is also in New York where many important decisions with global impacts are taken. In order to perform effectively within the UN system, diplomats need a profound understanding of conference diplomacy and the different UN organs based in New York.

As part of a long-term cooperation with the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UNITAR brought together 16 Algerian diplomats with experienced trainers and presenters in New York for a three-day training workshop. Participants were introduced to conferences held at the UN headquarters and also to current major negotiation topics. Through presentations held by practitioners from different UN organs, participants got an insight in the work of, for example, the Security Council, the Information Department, the Sixth Commission, and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Together with the facilitators, they discussed important issues such as the Post-2015 Development Agenda, the reform of the Security Council and progress in climate change negotiations. The participants enjoyed the interaction with facilitators and used the chance to ask many questions. Many of them would even have liked to stay longer in New York.

UNITAR’s Multilateral Diplomacy Programme is looking forward to implementing more training activities for Algerian diplomats in 2015.
