11-12 November 2013, Zhoushan City, PR China – UNITAR participated in the 2013 Technical Coordination Group Meeting under Strengthening Institutions,

Regulations and Enforcement Capacities for Effective and Efficient Implementation of the National Implementation Plan in China (the SIRE project), hosted by the Foreign Economic Cooperation Office, Ministry of Environmental Protection of PR China. The meeting was attended by 172 participants from central and local governments, academia, NGOs, United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), WorldBank, and UNITAR.

Participants, inter alia, reviewed national and international Stockholm POPs Convention implementation progress; evaluated PR China’s midterm implementation progress of its Stockholm Convention National Implementation Plan (NIP); and discussed 10 newly listed POPs and the Convention’s requirements. During the meeting, UNITAR, on behalf of the Inter-Organization Programme for the Sound Management of Chemicals (IOMC), presented the IOMC Toolbox for Decision Making in Chemicals Management.

In the afternoon of 11 November and in the morning of 12 November, four workshops were held on “NIP update”, “POPs Financing”, “Evaluation and Recovery of POPs Contaminated sites”, and “Dioxin Control Technical Exchange in the field of Medical Waste”.
