A staggering 1.25 million people die on the world’s roads every single year and up to 50 million more are left injured or disabled. Globally, over 500 children under the age of 18 are killed on the road each day. These numbers make road traffic injuries one of the leading causes of death worldwide and the leading cause of death amongst the most economically active citizens – those between the ages of 15 and 29.

UNITAR alongside public and private sector partners, is committed to both strengthening the capacities of government officials and key stakeholders to improve road safety and supporting the implementation of concrete actions that help achieve road safety related targets.

This workshop aims to help targeted countries advance towards the achievement of the Global Road Safety Performance Target 9: “by 2030, halve the number of road traffic injuries and fatalities related to drivers using alcohol.

 

The overall goal of the workshop is to provide in-depth training to law enforcement officers from the Dominican Republic and from the State of Yucatan to strengthen their capacities to implement breathalyzer campaigns in the Dominican Republic.

 

The workshop aims to achieve the following objectives:

  • Provide support to governments to have stronger capacity to implement high visibility enforcement campaigns on drink drive
  • Empower police officers through trainings to conduct effective high visibility enforcement campaigns
  • Facilitate collaboration and exchanges in the area of road safety between the Governments of the State of Yucatan in Mexico and the Government of the Dominican Republic.

 

The workshop covers the following topics:

  • The UN global framework related to road safety
  • High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) as a universal traffic safety approach designed to change unlawful traffic behaviours
  • Protocols to run and operate a breathalyzer checkpoints to tackle drinking and driving
  • Education and public awareness campaigns to promote a voluntary change and compliance with the law

The training workshop is delivered through lectures led by experts, roundatable discussions and practical excercises on the field.

It also includes the assessment of case studies and evaluation of high impact strategies on law enforcement such as checkpoints, patrols, publicity and alerts to the public.

The primary beneficiaries are police officers and government officials responsible for implementing road safety interventions from the Dominican Republic and from Mexico.

Law Enforcement Officers from the Dominican Republic, including officials from the National Institute of Transit and Transport (Instituto Nacional de Tránsito y Transporte Terrestre - INTRANT), the National Safety Agency for Transit and Transport (Dirección General de Seguridad de Tránsito y Transporte Terrestre, DIGESETT) and the National Road Safety School (Escuela Nacional de Educación Vial - ENEVIAL), along with Law Enforcements Officers representing municipalities from the State of Yucatan are direct beneficiaries of this training activity.
