In November 2012, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/67/L.25 (2012), which encourages the Secretary General, UNESCO, UNDP, and other relevant stakeholders "to strengthen their efforts to promote the values of peace, human rights, democracy, respect for religious and cultural diversity and democracy through education".  This resolution also encourages actors "to provide appropriate expertise and resources for the development of relevant education programmes and materials for democracy".  Taking into consideration this resolution, the seminar will focus on the history of the resolution and the steps for implementation of these recommendations at all levels of society.

By the end of this seminar, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the recommendations put forth in resolution A/67/L.25;
  • Learn what UN and member states are doing or planning to do to support and mainstream the recommendations from the resolution;
  • Discern the challenges to actualizing such recommendations and acquire strategies to overcome these challenges.

The seminar provides information on the content of resolution A/67/L.25 and how to best mainstream this resolution on Education for Democracy within the different levels of society.  This half-day event consists of the following four sections: - Section 1: Welcome and Opening Remarks - Section 2: Adoption of the Resolution and Mainstreaming Education for Democracy - Section 3: Content and Implementation - Section 4: Democracy Education Within the United Nations System.

This event is a seminar comprised of expert presentations.  It will invite engagement from its audience, involving question and answer sessions following the presentations.  The event will also provide a comprehensive set of reference and background material which will be distributed to all participants in order to facilitate learning and discussion.

The seminar is open to all permanent missions.  Delegates from Third Committee, however, may find this seminar particularly useful.  Representatives from ministries of education, United Nations departments, NGOs and the civil society are also all welcome to attend the seminar and participate in discussion.
