Three years into the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and with the first cycle of reviews coming to a close in 2019, it is imperative to review not only progress towards the Goals and Targets, but also the availability of data beyond official indicators, the development of monitoring and evaluation capacities of National Statistical Commissions as well as international and civil society organizations and the use of both official and unofficial sources of data to integrate the analysis so as to capture key dimensions of SDG16, both as a goal in itself and as an enabler for the 2030 Agenda as a whole. An important element of this conversation is the capacity building and institutional development aspects of SDG 16 monitoring efforts. Given the theme of the 2018 High Level Political Forum (HLPF) as "Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies", the SDG 16 Data Initiative, a consortium of 14 different organizations tracking global commitments on peace, justice and strong institutions, and UNITAR seek to engage with other organizations and alliances working on SDG 16 data, as well as national experts, and civil society, to obtain a more holistic view of where we stand in relation to the 2019 review of SDG 16.

The event will include a brief desk review based on a selection of national voluntary reviews, a reflection on the availability and measurement of indicators on SDG 16 by the data initiative with an eye to lessons learned and recommendations for guiding the tracking of implementation in the next cycle, including capacity building implications.
