The workshop will explore the potential civilian applications of UASs for Rapid Mapping during humanitarian crises and complex emergencies. It will bring together researchers, companies and end-users from the EU and UN in particular to test and discuss the applications of various UASs.

The workshop will be comprised of three major activities: a data-aquisition phase during which the UASs will be showcased, a data post-processing phase, and a series of discussions during the application sessions.

The application sessions will explore relevant themes in the cutting-edge world of UASs, from user needs and R&D needs to legal aspects of UAS operations and urban search and rescue applications.

The workshop aims to provide a qualitative comparison of different systems to demonstrate their diverse strengths and the most relevant usage scenarios for rapid mapping.

The workshop is extended over 3 work days structured around the following topics:

Day one: Data acquisition

Day two: Data post-processing

Day three: Application Sessions

This is a full time, workshop comprising lectures and GIS lab exercises using local datasets and real scenarios (80% lab exercises, 20% lectures and discussions).

European civil protection bodies, European Commission DGs, EU Agencies, EU member states, UNITAR-UNOSAT stakeholders, partners, and beneficiaries, UAS hardware/ service suppliers.

Co-organised by:
European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC) &
