UNITAR’s new Women’s Leadership Programme is working with UN Women and across the UN System, with the mandate to build skills, knowledge and capacities of government officials accredited to the United Nations and its entities.

Following UN Women’s Step it Up for Gender Equality call for Planet 50:50 by 2030, the Women’s Leadership Programme seeks to address the gender inbalance that exists on delegations to multilateral conferences under the United Nations and will seek to promote gender equality and women’s full and effective participation and leadership at all levels of political life.

Promoting women’s participation in governments and in decision-making fora is called for under many United Nations decisions. Having more women on delegations may facilitate new ways of reaching consensus and may inform more gender-responsive policy, whether in the field of human rights, peace and security, disarmament, environment, development or otherwise.

 At the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:

·   Critically assess what characterises a strong leader and appraise what is meant by charismatic and visionary leadership;

·   Strengthen personal confidence and direction as leaders;

·   Employ tools to build high-priority skills, such as networking, influencing others, negotiation, collaborative leadership, and public speaking;

The Leadership Workshop will be highly interactive and participatory, and include a variety of simulation exercises and pedagogical tools to enable an environment for creative and innovative thinking and mindful learning.

The Leadership Workshop will draw on the latest leadership models and innovative interactive training methods that require open-minded approaches to leadership, encouraging participants to explore their own personal leadership styles and models, and one’s own characteristics as a leader.

Facilitators provide a dynamic learning environment, balancing both leadership theory, practical exercises, case studies, video recordings, self-assessments, group discussions and facilitated dialogues. The Workshop also aims to inspire by including interventions and remarks from leading women in the field of diplomacy, through an armchair discussion.
