The imperative for competencies in trade negotiation and economic diplomacy has become increasingly acute. Given the various global economic shocks and crises we had to confront in the past years the global community has realized that new ways and means to reform the global economic system have to be found. This course aims to help participants understand what economic diplomacy is, how it has evolved over time and how it has become a fundamental component of a country’s foreign policy. It will also examine the various multilateral negotiating fora and the inter-relationship between them.

The workshop aims to increase the knowledge of Economic Diplomacy, actors, fora, evolution and key issues. At the end of the course, participants will have gained the understanding of concepts and skills needed for effective engagement in Economic Diplomacy and multilateral negotiations.

At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

•Discuss the basic concepts of economic diplomacy and how its practice has evolved;

•Identify key economic and development issues under negotiation in various multilateral forums;

•Explain the role and inter-relationships between the major multilateral economic and trade institutions;

•Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of tools and technique required in Economic Diplomacy.

In order to make this training workshop as interactive as possible, simulations and role-play exercises are used and discussed. Participants are asked to describe good practices. They are also provided with techniques for their daily negotiations in Geneva, for their preparations, actions, and reviews.

This workshop is open to members of Permanent Missions and delegates of Ministries of Foreign Affairs and other government officials, representatives of international, intergovernmental, and non-governmental organisations. Senior managers from the private sector are equally invited to benefit from this unique workshop.

The workshop will take place from 09:00-12:30 and 14:00-17:00 on both days, at the International Environment House (IEH), Chemin des Anémones 11-13, 1219 Châtelaine. The workshop will be conducted in English.

The workshop participation fee is 1000 USD. UNITAR is delighted to announce that a limited number of fellowships are available. Please select this link for more information: www.unitar.org/cdt-fellowships
