The period 2020 - 2030 was defined by the United Nations as the Decade of Action, in which countries were invited to accelerate their commitments towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda.

In September 2019, the United Nations Secretary General called on all sectors of society to mobilize for the Decade of Action on three levels: global action to secure greater leadership, more resources and smarter solutions for the Sustainable Development Goals; local action embedding the needed transitions in the policies, budgets, institutions and regulatory frameworks of governments, cities and local authorities; and people action, including by youth, civil society, the media, the private sector, unions, academia and other stakeholders, to generate an unstoppable movement pushing for the required transformations.

With just 10 years to go to transform the world and the future we want, leaving no one behind, an ambitious global effort is underway to deliver the 2030 promise—by mobilizing more governments, civil society, businesses and calling on all people to make the Global Goals their own. Parana  State Government is responding to the 2019 UN Secretary General call!

Located in South Brazil, Paran  State is one of the 27 federative units of the country and comprehends 399 municipalities. It has 11.500.000 inhabitants, what corresponds to 5% of total national population. With only 2,3% of the brazilian territory, the Parana State is the fifth major economy of the country and accounts to about 17% of all grains production, with a remarkable agro-industrial exporting economy.

The implementation of the 2030 Agenda in Paran  State is based on best localization practices and the state is a pioneer in the development of governance structure, tools and strategic partnerships in the planning, implementing and monitoring of relevant policies to sustainable development at the subnational and local levels.

The pandemic revealed the urgency of developing resilient societies that lead policies with an integrated and multidimensional approach, relying on all possible partnerships. People’s lives are being saved in the cities, yet we share with the world apprehensions and expectations for the future - this moment reinforces that global challenges can only be faced with local solutions. Surviving the crisis is not enough - rebuilding better is the basis for joint actions and to focus on people is a particular opportunity. The Paran  State Strategy has been encouraging multi-stakeholders partnerships to accelerate sustainable development in the state, so that recovery from the effects of the pandemic in people’s lives is faster and more consistent.

The participation of Paran  State in the OECD Programme A Territorial Approach to the SDGs brought to light some of the challenges faced by Paran  State, which mainly reflects common issues to all Brazilian federative units, such as territorial disparities, social inequality and data gaps for monitoring some of the SDGs. On the other hand, some of Parana State indicators showed just slightly lower or either can be compared to many developed countries, including on SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth.

Paran  State has normative, governance, technical-operational and political conditions, together with international, national and local partners, to accelerate the recovery of the State.

The main focus of the event is on SDG 17, but the Paran  Keeping an Eye on the SDGs Strategy, the OECD Programme and other partners will also discuss local-relevant aspects on the SDGs 1, 3, 8, 10, 12, 16 and special linkages among SDGs.
