Geospatial Information Technology (GIT) can be a very useful tool for the whole disaster risk management cycle starting from the preparedness phase, mitigation to response, recovery and reconstruction. GIT has proven to be efficient for implementing coherent disaster risk reduction (DRR) activities at regional, national and local scales. Quantifying risk and expected future losses is a key step in any disaster risk reduction program. Also the outputs and scenarios of a risk assessment contribute to structuring overall risk reduction policies and planning. Geospatial risk assessment can be performed with GIT tools and techniques which can quantify risk and identify the locations in need of risk reduction measures. The role of GIT doesn’t stop there; in the immediate aftermath of a disaster, satellite based rapid response analysis enables the emergency response agencies to respond in a better and coordinated way.

The first set of training was conducted during 17-21 October, 2016 in Nay Pi Taw, Myanmar. The course provided training participants with introductory concepts and geospatial methodologies for risk assessment. According to the feedback from participants, the training was 100% successful and it provided a motivation boost to make participants confident of the knowledge and skills acquired for applying Geospatial Information Technology methodologies in their professional setting. With the training students a community of experts was formed and using the community of practice the participants are able to exchange ideas and problems related to DRR issues related to their own job field.

The final set of training to be held in 5 - 9 December, 2016 in Nay Pi Taw will equip the students with advanced tools and methologies from effective decision making related to disaster risk assessment and emergency response.

The aim of this course is to provide participants with GIS and RS methodologies related to disaster risk reduction.

At the end of the course students should be able to:

  • Recall basic concepts and terminologies related to geospatial information technology
  • Recall basic concepts and terminologies related to disaster risk reduction
  • Apply geospatial methodologies to perform flood risk assessment
  • Apply geospatial methodologies to perform cyclonic risk assessment
  • Apply geospatial methodologies to perform impact analysis and preliminary damage assessment in the immediate aftermath of a disaster.
  • Demonstrate the use geospatial information for decision making

On the first day the training participants will get refresh their knowledge of geospatial information technology and disaster risk reduction. Also they will be introduced to The Rapid Analysis and Spatialisation of Risk (RASOR) platform for calculating cyclonic risk interactively in web GIS. Second day will be dedicated to calculate flood risk assessment in structural and socio-economic system using RASOR. Third day the participants will be introduced to the concept of emergency response mapping and they will apply geospatial methodologies to estimate probable flood impact from satellite images. Fourth day an interactive session will be conducted to equip the participants with techniques of using geospatial information for decision making.

This is a full-time, face-to-face course with lectures and GIS lab exercises using local datasets and real case scenarios (80% lab exercises, 20% lectures and discussions). This course is divided into 5 Modules. Each module is structured into 4 sessions of 1.5 hour each. The average workload per day is likely to be around 6-7 hours.

It is recommended that participants of the course “Introduction to Geospatial Information technology for Disaster Risk Reduction” held during 17-21 October in Nay Pi Taw, Myanmar are selected for the training.

Software:

GIS lab exercises will be based on ESRI ArcGIS editor 10.4 with extensions (spatial analyst), Google Earth and internet access.

 

Class Size:

The number of participants is limited to 20.

 

UNITAR Certificate:

Students will be awarded certificates from UNITAR on successful completion of the course.
