Upon the request of The Permanent Mission of Singapore to the United Nations, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) will carry out the “Briefing for Delegates on the 72nd Session of the General Assembly and the Main Committees.”, to be conducted in English, for FOSS Members.  The Course will be delivered in September 2017 over 2 days in the premises of the Permanent Mission of Singapore.

In September, hundreds of diplomats will be attending the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Organisation’s main deliberative body. A large proportion will come from the capitals and may not be sufficiently familiar with the United Nations. Before taking up their assignments, many diplomats feel the need for a short but very intensive course on the functions of the General Assembly and its Main Committees. This general briefing, that attracts hundreds of participants, aims at providing such information to new delegates to the General Assembly.

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the functions, practices and procedures of the General Assembly;
  • Identify and assess the main issues before the General Assembly;
  • Determine the role of the President of GA and informal consultations;
  • Provide delegates with an overview of critical issues to the work of The Main Committees;
  • Prepare participants to effectively engage in discussions on subject matters relevant to their Committee;
  • Sensitize delegates for the special procedures and dynamics of each committee.
