Briefing on Geneva's Multilateral Working Environment
Managing meetings, information, decision-making, and reporting tasks at the United Nations and international organizations is an achievement in itself for most Permanent Missions in Geneva. Over the years, diplomats have increased linkages in the work of these organizations to enhance the effectiveness of the United Nations. This briefing will provide a concise overview of Geneva's international public work domain in order to promote communication between organizations and enhance the diplomat's effectiveness in operating in the multilateral environment.
By the end of the briefing, participants should be able to:
• Define the functions of the major international organizations in Geneva;
• Recognize and analyze linkages between international and non-governmental organizations;
• Identify the relationship between Geneva-based Member States and their respective missions worldwide;
• Explain the general history and structure of the UN system.
The briefing's content is liable to change, but will tentatively include:
• Roundtable and panel discussion on UN reform and other topics
• Presentation on UN System and its components
• Focus on decision-making in the UN
• Presentations by International Organization representatives
The briefing will be use both presentations by career diplomats and those working in the international system, as well as engage participants to engage in roundtable discussions.
This briefing targets primarily, though by no means exclusively, members of Permanent Missions who have been accredited to the United Nations or other international organizations in Geneva in the recent months and wish to familiarize themselves in a concise and intensive manner with the work of these organizations.
