The workshop will bring together representatives from Governments, civil society, the private sector and intergovernmental organizations to assess progress and advance proposals to move Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration into its next generation of reforms. Principle 10 addresses access to information, public participation and access to justice in environmental matters. Within the framework of the workshop, UNITAR and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) are jointly organizing a working session in the afternoon entitled “Capacity Development to Strengthen Participatory Environmental Governance”. The session will discuss challenges and opportunities for strengthening national capacities for implementation of Principle 10 and the UNEP Guidelines for the Development of National Legislation for Access to Information, Public Participation and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters. The format of the Session will be a moderated panel and include an interaction among panelists and session participants.
