CIFAL Atlanta - Model United Nations Conference
Universities all over the world are involved in Model United Nations. Georgia State University's Model UN team has met students from all over the world just by being on the team and going to conference. Model UN is an excellent club for all students interested in diplomacy, teaching, politics, or any other career path because it teaches them to speak publicly, debate, work with others, be diplomatic, write resolutions to help solve current world issues, and learn how to represent another country when they may never have had the chance to live outside of their hometown.
The skills developed through this program are integral not only at conferences, but in real life scenarios. Georgia State’s team has traveled all over the globe winning awards in Model UN. Leading our own conference right at home in Atlanta is our way to find future team members while laying a foundation for young minds that incorporates the importance of understanding global affairs, politics, environment, and security issues so that they may be well versed in matters of foreign affairs as they choose a college and career path. Every conference discusses real problems giving students a chance to feel like their voice matters
Prior to the conference, the high school students research topics their committees will address and study the policy and needs of their representative states and produce a position paper for their respective committee which will be reviewed by their committee staff.
The event aims to enhance students skills in terms of:
- giving speeches
- preparing draft resolutions
- negotiating with allies and adversaries
- resolving conflicts
- navigating the Model UN conference Rules of Procedures
CIFAL Atlanta will deliver sessions to inform participants about the background of the SDGs and to motivate them to develop creative solutions to each of them.
The conference will include:
- Opening Ceremonies
- Committee Sessions
- Mission Briefings
- Head Delegates Meeting
- Delegate Seminars
- Plenary Sessions
- Closing Ceremonies
The participants will role-play as diplomats representing a nation or NGO in a simulated session of a committee of the United Nations, such as the Security Council or the General Assembly Plenary. Participants will research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions in the form of resolutions to world problems. In general, the participants that the committee staff considers to be the most contributing in their research, resolution writing, speaking, advocating their state’s policies, and diplomatic efforts are given awards, such as the ‘Outstanding Delegate’ award.
The targeted audience includes: Georgia high school Model United Nations club members.
