International companies operating in the United States need to keep pace with developments in employment law. The U.S. Employment Law in a Global Context training workshop will introduce participants to key legal issues facing in-house counsel and human resources managers of international companies operating in the U.S. or seeking to establish themselves in the U.S. market. 

Employment, social protection, decent work and rights in the workplace directly correlate with significant targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.  Goal 8 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) strives to “promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.”

After completion of the U.S. Employment Law in a Global Context Training, individuals will be educated on labor policies, worker rights and current employment issues in the United States in order to be able to operate effectively in a dynamic global employment context.

 After completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the historical context of Labor and Employment Law in the U.S. and explain how the past has shaped our current laws and policies.
  • Summarize key labor laws most commonly applicable to businesses, job seekers and workers in the U.S.
  • Identify labor laws pertaining to discrimination, sexual harassment and privacy issues within the workplace
  • Explain the role and importance of business immigration, trade secrets and employment mobility in employment law
  • Understand U.S. Employment contracts for a global workforce.

This training workshop includes ten sessions led by prominent experts in a variety of focus areas within the field of labor and employment law. Session discussions will highlight the responsibilities and rights of individuals within the United States workforce and include detailed presentations designed to equip participants with practical specialized knowledge. The workshop will consist of the following sessions:

  • U.S. Labor and Employment Law: An Historical Overview
  • U.S. Labor Law Today
  • Fair Labor Standards Act
  • Employment Discrimination/Title VII
  • Sexual Harassment Law
  • Privacy Issues in the Workplace
  • Dispute Resolution Systems in Employment Law & Arbitration Clauses in Employment Contracts
  • Global Mobility Best Practices
  • Trade Secrets, Non-Competes, and Employee Mobility
  • Considerations of Employment Contracts for a Global Workforce

The learning activities for this workshop include sessions consisting of lectures, participant dialogue and activities including hands-on training exercises, all of which are complemented by networking elements before and after sessions.


This training workshop is open to attorneys and human resource managers operating in an international context as well as students, researchers, and academic professionals seeking deeper knowledge of labor and employment law.
