CIFAL Jeju - The 12th Youth Workshop
Young people under 30 years old account for almost half of the global population. There is no doubt that the youth plays a crucial role in influencing others to support the SDGs. Advocacy is a strategic and deliberate process to bring about change in policies and practice. Youth has a power to present global issues with their creativity and energy and with appropriate advocacy strategy. It is possible to positively impact the community, nation, and the world.
Out of 17 SDGs, this workshop focuses on Goal 9 and 13 which are related to the theme of “Green Infrastructure for Climate Resilience”. Target 9.A states “Facilitate sustainable and resilient infrastructure development in developing countries through enhanced financial, technological and technical support to African countries, least developed countries, landlocked developing countries and Small Island Developing States (SIDS)”. Also, Target 13.1 says “Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries”.
Climate change influences every part of the globe but its impact is greater for those who live in urban areas. In 2016, about 54.5% of the world’s population lived in urban settlements and by 2030, it is projected to house 60% of people (UN Data booklet, 2016). Green infrastructure manages water and create healthier environment by using vegetation, soils, and natural processes (EPA, 2016). It emerged as a solution that can help improve community resilience. The concept is widely ranged from flood management to lowering building energy demands.
At COP21 in Paris, a Green Infrastructure Investment Coalition was formed, inviting government agencies, international asset managers, owners and development agencies to promote green infrastructure development and financing. The question is what can we do as youths? How can we address these issues?
During the workshop, we are going to explore innovative solutions that can be found in our society. Also, you and your group will be also sharing your own ideas to address these issues with a proper advocacy strategy and think about possible activities or solutions to promote green infrastructure for climate resilience.
-To educate undergraduate and graduate students on Sustainable Development Goals and equip them to be the leaders of the 2030 generation
-To foster youth advocators of green infrastructure for climate resilience for building a sustainable future
-To provide an opportunity to explore Jeju
The participants will gain knowledge on
SDG 9. (to build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation) and SDG 13 (to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts). They also understand their roles as youth advocates.
The workshop will include the following components:
Day 1:
Youth Engagement: Innovative Youth Participation in Climate Resilience and Disaster Risk Reduction
Understanding of Green Infrastructure and Climate Resilience
Group Discussions
Day 2:
Field trip to National Typhoon Center
Field trip to Renewable Energy Exhibition Hall Information
Tour of Jeju Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak
Day 3:
Presentation of group discussion results
The event will be delivered through:
- Lectures by experts
- Discussions initiated by participants
Undergraduate, graduate school students or international students in Korea who are interested in youth advocacy, Climate Resilience, Disaster Risk Reduction and Green Infrastructure.
