This course aims to provide a global view of the challenges that problems such as immigration, jihadist-oriented international terrorism, or the rise of violent radicalization pose to the countries of southern Europe and North Africa located around the geopolitical subregion of the Western Mediterranean.

The program includes a series of presentations in which the evolution of these threats in the different countries of the zone will be presented and discussed, as well as the strategies, policies and measures adopted to counteract them, especially in matters of international cooperation between the governments of Spain and Morocco, as well as security, from a multidisciplinary approach, of the Sahel and its surroundings, in which the multiple risks and threats will be analyzed, as well as certain variables, shared both by the countries that make up the area, and by those located more North-Maghreb, Spain and Europe.

Participants will access knowledge and updated information on these phenomena from the hand of academic and professional experts, with extensive experience in immigration, anti-terrorism and prevention of radicalization.
The course also seeks to arouse a collective reflection, among speakers and participants, on how these problems should be addressed from a citizen perspective, without falling into disinformation, rumorology or rejection of the foreign population of Muslim confession.

Three thematic axes will be addressed:

  • The terrorist threat worldwide: with special emphasis on jihadist terrorism and how Morocco and Spain act against terror.
  • Immigration as a conflict that affects many countries, but especially Spain and Morocco.
  • The fight against radicalization from both sides.

The course will be structured in the following presentations, with subsequent debate:

  • Terrorism, migration and organized crime
  • The terrorist phenomenon in Africa and its scope on European security: special emphasis on security in Spain and Morocco
  • Fight against international terrorism
  • The new Moroccan policy on migration and political asylum
  • Relations between Spain and Morocco on intelligence
  • The risks and threats in the Sahel, a challenge for security of the Maghreb and the EU

The course lasts 72 hours face to face. It will be based on the presentation of several papers by specialists in the field, and the debate with the attendees will be encouraged. Upon completion of the course, a final evaluation will be carried out to contrast the knowledge acquired during the course.
