Over the past 20 years disasters have affected 4.4 billion people, caused USD 2 trillion of damage and killed 1.3 million people. Disasters have affected people living in developing countries and, in particular, the most vulnerable communities within these countries. Particularly in the context of increased urbanization, urban risk continues to rise. The vulnerability of cities to disasters is growing especially as poor people settle in high-risk urban areas. Unfortunately, the planning and development of cities has given little consideration to the consequences of hazards such as earthquakes, hydro-meteorological risks and others. The implication of this reality is the need for countries to focus on creating a safer world for urban dwellers and developing a series of innovative approaches to reduce the risk of disasters and build resilience.

This workshop aims to provide an overview to the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and its relationship to the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The workshop aims to be an introduction to disaster risk reduction. 

This course will enable participants to: 

  • Identify the links between hazards, vulnerability, exposure and risk 
  • Explain the relationship between DRR and urban resilience
  • Identify examples of the connection between DRR and the UN SDGs
  • Apply an appropriate resilience strategy to a specific development challenge

This workshop provides the following:

  • Introduction to UN Sustainable Ddevelopment Goals (SDGs)
  • Introduction to disaster risk reduction (DRR)

It begins with a brief summary of the development of the DRR agenda highlighting the advances in thinking in relation to hazards and vulnerability, consequent risks and their mitigation. It stresses the inherent wastefulness, both human and economic, of failing to mitigate and then successfully manage the effects of extreme events, and presents the framework within which a systematic approach to DRR can be planned, implemented, and improved.

The workshop concludes with a brief assessment that reinforces understanding of the key points associated with the UN Sendai Framework and DRR.

 

As the workshop aims to develop understanding regarding the UN SDGs, it will be delivered through dynamic discussions, and a short-self assessment will be conducted to measure the level of pre and post-workshop skills level assessment that reinforces understanding of the key points associated with the United Nations SDGs. 

The workshops is intended for students who are completing iLEAD. ILEAD is the University of Newcastle’s International Leadership Experience and Development Program. It is aimed at providing students with the exceptional opportunity to gain experience and skills in the areas of leadership, international awareness, social responsibility, and employability.
