UP-CIFAL Philippines through its Road Safety Project continuously engage various stakeholders in discussing the importance of road safety education for all road users especially the youth sector.

One of the Centre’s new partner for 2018, 3M Philippines has launch “Drive For Road Safety” campaign where UP-CIFAL Philippines was invited to discuss the link between road safety and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The overall objective of the event is to have a broad understanding on Road Safety and the impact of the road accidents and deaths (urgency) in cities. It also aims to promote responsible driving as well as encourage everyone to become road safety advocates.

After the talk on the link of road safety and SDGs, the speakers and participants discussed the following four pillars:

  • Road Safety Management – Discussion of Philippine laws and regulations
  • Infrastructure – Road designs and standard on signage including lighting/reflectivity
  • Safe Vehicles – Vehicle maintenance standards
  • Road User Behavior – Discipline and safety through education, training, speed management, etc.

The event began with a primer presented by UP-CIFAL Philippines Director Dr. Edna Co, which included the 5 challenges to road safety: Education, Engineering, Effective Enforcement, Emergency Care, and Evaluation.  It then proceeded with the discussion of the 4 pillars mentioned above.

After the discussion, a fire-side chat with CNN Philippines TV host James Deakin, 3M Philippines President and Managing Director Ariel Lacsamana, and Vera Files reporter Lucille Sodipe on different road safety issues was conducted and moderated by road safety advocate Vincent Lazatin.

This event was simultaneously broadcasted via Facebook Live of 3M Philippines’ Page.

Participants are representatives of various road safety organizations in the Philippines.
